The sun is high and the early morning seems to be bright. Mohammed Essa seems to be the man to beat as he passes ululating fans. Jas Mangat arrives right in Duncan Mubiru’s time by atleast 50secs and the entertainment seems to be at fever pitch going into CS 4 at Busiika hospitality area….

Until

What started off with loads of excitement, the Shell Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally with hardly 2 section gone, retirements are coming in. The Wabutungulu- Busiika section has been long and tough with a lot of rugged ground. The feint hearted, the miss-planners and the those without caution as predicted earlier have not survived.

Lawyer Nsamba’s recently acquired Evo 5, Mitsubish Lancer has fallen first casualty of CS3 with mechanical failure. The 48.38km section has also claimed Uganda’s recent Safari hero Fred Wampamba with engine failure. In quick succession, Wycliff Bukenya who completed the section with a damaged rear suspection has not started CS4 at Busiika and we are still trying to establish the real problem. For all his speeds, even the Mafu Mafu fame, Ponsiano Lwakataka seems to be parking and we are yet to confirm what is suspected to be an engine problem.

With such early retirements, one wonders what will happen with up to 13 sections left for the day.
